A few basic guidelines:

For volunteers:

1.) Feel free to post in multiple categories if you like.  If you can give a quick estimate of your skill level (basic, hobbyist, pro), and/or about how much time you might be available (less than an hour per job, a few hours per year, month, or week), that'd be helpful, too.  Keep in mind that NGOs will need to contact you to reconfirm your availability when offering you an assignment, so it's okay to post several skills even if you could only do one at a time.  

2.) At the moment, we don't have the resources to vet the NGOs who come to our site (if you can help with that, let us know!), so feel free to check them out and find one you'd most like to support.  

For NGOs:

1.) We welcome requests for services or non-monetary resources from any NGO, non-profit, or community-based organization working for the greater good anywhere in the world.  If you have questions about eligibility, please contact us.  Needless to say, please only request services and resources that you are not able to provide yourselves, through your staff, your volunteers, or your own financial resources.  The purpose of if I had a hammer is to empower grassroots NGOs with assistance they could not have otherwise gotten.  

2.) Because of our emphasis on using informal, small-commitment volunteering to widen the pool of resources, keep in mind that the volunteers who post on this site may not always be available, and that most would do best with small, manageable projects.  Contact the volunteer you have in mind in advance to confirm that they are still available, and understand that posting here does not obligate them to any specific jobs.  Of course, please assign each particular task to only one volunteer at a time, but you may want to split larger or more long-term projects into smaller pieces, and give each piece to a different volunteer.
